Scalp Micropigmentation of hair transplant scars

Scars that occur after a previous hair transplant are perfectly treatable by our experienced specialists and with our latest techniques. Combined with Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) the scars can be made more or less invisible to the eye. This application can be used both with FUE and FUT scars.

We can create an adequate colour for each individual, composed of different pigments that will approach the natural skin and hair colour to near perfection. This camouflages the scar and creates the natural look of real hair follicles.

The results achieved over the years have been excellent. On average, three treatments are needed. These take place at intervals of 4 weeks to allow the skin enough time to recover properly after each treatment. This approach also assures that we can operate at the highest possible level of detail.

Combination Scalp Micropigmentation and hair transplant

The combination of Scalp Micropigmentation with low density FUE hair transplantation has also proven to be a great success. Combining Scalp Micropigmentation and FUE hair transplant results in great visual density with a relatively limited amount of transplanted hair. The combination of treatments is perfect for people with a limited donor area and / or a limited budget. About 2,000 grafts are needed to get a good result.

The process is as follows: we start with a Scalp Micropigmentation treatment, this requires a crew cut style; at least 4 weeks later the FUE hair transplant of 2000 grafts will take place and 3 months hereafter the second Scalp Micropigmentation treatment will take place. We have a long standing collaboration with Aesthetic Beauty Clinics in Veldhoven for the SMP and FUE combination treatment. Please contact us to discuss your options.

Answers to frequently asked questions about Scalp Micropigmentation

For whom and when is the Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatment appropriate?

The Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatment is applied in case of full hair loss in men and women, or with a reduced density of the hair when bald patches are present, to make scars invisible after a hair transplant and in combination with a low density hair transplant. This is also a great solution when additional compaction is desired after a hair transplant. Furthermore, if you want your hairline lower than where it currently is, which is applicable if you want to get rid of inlets or want to rejuvenate your hairline, it’s very important that you do not wear your hair longer than 0.5 mm. If this is not the case then basically every hair length is possible.

Be advised that clients under 18 must have written permission from a parent or guardian before we will agree to treat them.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) look natural?

Certainly! We regularly receive feedback from men and women who indicate that no one has noticed. It is important to realise that you yourself however will always see it because you know that its there. We want to be 100% honest so you can make an informed decision. SMP suggests a full head of stubble but it doesn’t make the actual hair grow back. Sometimes dormant hair follicles will be stimulated by the treatment, but this is not a guarantee.

Will the pigmented area shine?

If none of your own hairs are left, then the treated area will have more shine than the area where hair is still present. To prevent this, we recommend you use a matte sunblock in the summer which will also protect your SMP against the influence of the sun, and that you use a mattifying cream in the winter.

Can the colour be adjusted to suit any person?

Yes, the colour is always perfectly adapted to the individual. Adjusting the colour is thereby also the most important aspect of the treatment. This is true (where applicable) for both hair and skin colour.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) also suitable if your hair is blonde?

Yes! However, the colour used for pigmentation always needs to be darker than the skin tone.

What is the difference between Scalp Micropigmentation and a regular tattoo?

In a regular tattoo different pigments, needles and pigmentation techniques are used. For the SMP technique, organic inks, fixed or not fixed are used. The pigmentation with SMP is all about using fine detail to obtain the desired natural look, therefore the needle used to make the “stubble” is so delicate that it is less invasive and also creates a more refined look than what can be achieved with conventional tattoo techniques.

How long or short does my hair need to be for the treatment?

For men it’s best if the hair is no longer than 1 millimeter during treatment. If you have any difficulty shaving your hair, we can also do that for you. The reason for this is so that we can clearly see what your hair colour is at this length. Later on, you can grow your hair longer, but if you ever decide to go back to mere millimeters again you can do so. For women this is not needed. But keep in mind that should you ever be bald (e.g. after chemotherapy), the pigmented ‘hairs’ will be visible. It is possible to pigment with longer hair, but a 1 millimeter crew cut style before the treatment gives more options for the client after the treatment.

How often should I get a touch up?

When or if you want to get a touch up is completely up to you. For the vast majority of our clients updates are not needed.

What should I do if I have gray hair?

Gray hair is not a problem seeing as most people become gray in a mixed way with their own hair colour. It is advisable to use a slightly darker colour than your own hair colour. A medium / dark gray.

Are there disadvantages to Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Basically not, however, just as with a normal tattoo or permanent makeup it cannot be predicted beforehand for the full 100% how your skin will deal with the pigments. There is a slim chance that the introduced pigments encapsulate unevenly. Especially if you do not follow the aftercare instructions properly. This can of course be corrected during subsequent treatment but is nevertheless not to be desired. Therefore, in light of the before mentioned potential undesired outcome, it is extremely important that you follow the instructions for aftercare ensuring that the maximum amount of pigment will remain in the skin. Use of the solarium, or certain medications can also cause more emissions of pigment. We will make every effort possible to obtain the best result, but we also expect you to take care of the pigmentation in the correct way after the treatment.

Can I do a test piece, partly due to allergies?

This is recommended if you have a history of allergic reactions. But also if you are unsure whether this treatment is right for you.

Are there any contraindications?

Unless you are allergic to the dyes, there are few indications that you cannot undergo a SMP treatment. It is true that certain medications can ensure that the pigments may be less properly inserted, remain in the skin less, and can discolour. This can happen if you use eg blood thinners, but also it is recommended to not drink any alcohol or do drugs the day before treatment and to get a full night’s sleep. You are also required to report all use of medications before starting the treatment. In the event that you have used noticeable amounts of alcohol or other drugs the day before treatment, our specialists reserves the right to discontinue the treatment immediately. In this case, the situation must unfortunately be treated as a late cancellation and you can be charged with the amount that has to be paid in case of a late cancellation.

Is the treatment painful?

You may experience some discomfort or mild pain during treatment. Our customers, however, have indicated that they haven’t experienced this to be problematic.

Are there opportunities to anaesthetize the pain?

It is possible to use paracetamol prior to the treatment. This can be taken the day before the treatment and on the day itself. The schedule is as follows: – 1 day prior to the treatment 3 x 1000 mg daily, on the day of treatment depending on the time of treatment 3 x 1000 mg daily.

How long does a Scalp Micropigmentation treatment take?

The average duration of a first treatment is 10 hours spread over 2 consecutive days (if the entire top area needs to be filled up) 4 weeks later, only if the area treated has healed sufficiently, a 2nd treatment will be carried out in which the specialist will apply a new layer over the previously treated area. This is done to obtain even greater density. Usually 1 x small touch up after the treatment will be enough to keep the end result for many years to come.

Should I take time off after the treatment?

It’s up to you whether or not you want to take time off after the treatment. The treated area will be bright red after the treatment and this may last for several days. We have the ability to temporarily partly conceal the treated area with a camouflage cream. Let us know if you’d prefer this.

Is it possible to remove the Scalp Micropigmentation?

Yes, SMP can be removed by laser. The laser that we use is one of the best lasers currently on the market and is used in hospitals. The balanced light output and very short laser pulse will not damage the skin or hair follicles. The laser removes the pigments that have been placed by us in 1 or 2 treatments. If the pigment was placed by another provider then more treatments may be needed depending on the type and depth of pigments used.

I have had SMP done somewhere else but am not happy with the result, can you adjust it?

We regularly receive requests from men who have had SMP done somewhere else, and are not satisfied with the outcome. This often puts a lot of strain on the person treated. Its indeed very difficult to solve this but certainly not impossible. It all depends on how poorly the SMP pigmentation was applied. When the SMP is inserted too deeply and / or the wrong colours were used, we can potentially use laser to remove the old pigmentation. After removal with laser its possible to repigment the area, but, unfortunately, this can only take place 6 months after the last laser treatment. We strongly advise you to base your decision for your choice of practitioner on thorough research. How much experience do they have with the treatment, how are the before and after pictures, is there is a possibility to view the pictures on the camera used to take them (to make sure they are not using pictures from others).

Is an intake interview always necessary?

We do recommend it. Its helpful in estimating how long the treatment will last and what the end result will be, if we can actually see the treatment area. If this is difficult for you because of the travel distance to our offices than you can schedule a telephone consultation or use our online SMP Photo Consult Service. The intake interviews are free and without any obligation!

Suppose I set up an appointment for a treatment, what happens then?

It’s very important that you are on time on the day of treatment, if you arrive later this can result in a shortened treatment time. Also you need to have any and all papers filled out, after which the treatment will begin. First we discuss the expectations and possibilities and then draw the new hair line of course in full agreement with you. We will then discuss the preferred colour. Usually the basic pigmentation is done with a slightly lighter colour than your hair colour because it gives a better end result. If you have a problem with this then we request that you inform us about this before the start of the treatment. At the end of the treatment you decide if you are a 100% happy with the results and request adjustments if needed. Finally we apply a nourishing cream which you will take home to continue application of the cream for optimal result.

How about payment?

In most cases, especially in case of the extensive treatments, we require a deposit which will of course be deducted from your total treatment amount. You can pay by cash withdrawal using a debit card at our offices or you can pay in cash.

What are the precautions for my Scalp Micropigmentation treatment?

You can positively influence the course and outcome of the treatment by following these precautions. It’s allowed to take 1000 mg paracetamol three times daily on the day before the treatment to aid in pain relief. Do not use ibuprofen, aspirin or Nurofen. If you are taking other medications or supplements you need to report this well in advance of the first treatment in case of any contraindications. It is important that you try and get enough sleep the night before the treatment so that you are fully rested. Alcohol and drugs are definitely not recommended as of 24 hours before treatment starts. Additional anaesthesia: you can get EMLA in cream application via your GP. You will start applying this cream generously one hour and half an hour before the treatment begins. Also make sure to not schedule any parties on the day of the appointment or make any other arrangements where it is important for you to look your best. The treated area will be red and it is also important that you keep reapplying the treated area with the cream we give you to take home.

What does the aftercare of my Scalp Micropigmentation treatment look like?

The first week after the treatment you use the product, that you get from us. You need to apply this cream at least 3 to 4 times a day very thinly to ensure that the pigmentation heals as quickly as possible and as much pigment as possible is retained in the skin. This cream however is very greasy. As a result, it may be necessary to take a couple of days off. Inflammation or other problems during the healing period of the treated area are not common. If you however do experience any issues then it is important that you call Beauty Care Nederland immediately. After about five days, it may be a week, the pigmentation will suddenly seem less visible. This is due to the fact that the healing skin sometimes will not be transparent at first. This however will restore itself quickly enough, after which the pigmentation will be visible again. Furthermore, it is very important that you do not expose the treated skin to UV light, sweat, sauna or a swimming pool for the first few days after the treatment. This is due to the risk of fading or inflammation. You are allowed to wash the hair with a gentle shampoo (for example, baby shampoo) 48 hours after treatment.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation an option for a hair transplant scar?

Beauty Care Nederland has developed a technique that works extremely well on the traumatised skin. This makes it possible to camouflage your scar for about 80 to 90% in just a few treatments. It is important to realise that we cannot remove but only improve and camouflage the scar. Viewed from the side, a slight difference in skin texture can still be visible if there are no hairs left on the location of the scar. You can solve this by transplanting some hair in the scar. A big advantage of our treatment is that when you do decide to transplant new hair in the scar, they will all come up because the scar tissue has improved by so much.

I would like to have a soft natural hairline, is that possible?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some customers want a straight hairline, but most customers want a soft randomly faded front hairline. This is where you need to rely on the artistic abilities of our specialists, they will draw the hairline in advance to reflect the end result as closely as possible. Beauty Care Nederland can realise almost every wish (within certain limits of course). Another great option is to combine SMP with a (low density) hair transplant on the front hairline.

Why should I choose to have Scalp Micropigmentation done by Beauty Care Nederland?

You are in very safe hands with the experienced specialists at Beauty Care Nederland. Hundreds of satisfied customers have preceded you. Beauty Care Nederland is the clinic who introduced SMP in the Nederland and Belgium and has given it the name Scalp Micropigmentation. We have many years of experience with Scalp Micropigmentation and specialise in creating the right hairline, so you’ll get a very natural result. We only work with specialists who have an art background so you can be sure that you get the very best and that the specialist is a perfectionist! Experience and expertise are extremely important in this treatment. We work with specialised and sophisticated equipment and pigments of the highest quality that are free of heavy metals.

What will I look like after treatment?

Immediately after the procedure your scalp will look slightly red. A bit like sunburn. This is often the case in patients with light skin. When you use the cream that we will give you to take home as instructed, then this will be reduced to a minimum. It is normal that the redness lasts for about 2 to 3 days.

Can I get in touch with some of your customers?

Yes, certainly! We have a number of people you can visit to see the results in real life. We also organise Open Days on a regular, almost monthly, basis. On these days you can watch a live SMP treatment and come into contact with treated customers. More information about the open days can be found on the Blog page of this website or on our Facebook Page. When you visit us for a consultation its also almost always possible to watch a SMP treatment in progress.

What pigments or inks are used in a Scalp Micropigmentation treatment?

The pigments we use are 100% safe. They are Micropigmentation organic pigments with only the highest quality ingredients and formulated especially for the scalp.

When do I need a so-called touch up?

Based on our experience there is basically no requirement for touch ups after the basic treatments. However, about 10% of our clients will have their SMP checked annually because they are either unwilling or unable to protect it from the sun or because they feel more secure when its checked annually. This touch up consists of a small treatment which costs € 395, -.

Can I cancel an appointment?

Due to the length of the appointment, we request that you cancel no later than five working days before the day of treatment. In this case we have the ability to schedule in another client. If this requirement is not met, then as Beauty Care Nederland we reserve the right to charge 50% of the agreed treatment fee for the costs incurred. Exceptions can be made for extenuating circumstances.

Can Scalp Micropigmentation also be applied for longer hair?

Based on our experience application of Scalp Micropigmentation for longer hair often doesn’t give the desired result. Treating longer hair is high-risk because of the need to work with darker pigments (than we would with a shaved look) in order to achieve the correct density. As a result, the risk of discolouration of the pigment is large. In men, there is also unfortunately the risk that hair loss will occur at a certain age and then this could become a problem. However, its possible to shave the hair before the treatment and then let it grow back again. The compacting effect, however, will not be very high in this case. For women we can and have made an exception because the situation in these cases is often different.

I use Propecia/Finasteride or Minoxidil/Rogaine, do they have consequences for SMP?

The use of Finasteride has, up to now, not demonstrated adverse effects on the Scalp Micropigmentation treatment. However, this remedy does have many other side effects about which you can read in the leaflet. Minoxidil contains alcohol which can cause the Scalp Micropigmentation to become lighter at a slightly faster pace.
